EPIC tourney kicks offBY J. MIKE BLAKE, Staff Writer
Both Cary Christian basketball teams have conference title aspirations after finishing the regular season first and second, respectively in the Eastern Plains Independent Conference.
The 4-5 and 3-6 games will begin today. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday
The Lady Knights are 23-4 on the season and went through the EPIC schedule unscathed in 10 games. After winning the EPIC regular season title in back-to-back seasons, Carmen Javaux's team will try to repeat the same feat in the conference tournament.
Unlike last season, when Cary Christian tore through the conference, this year has had its share of close calls. The Lady Knights defeated 2-seed St. David's by 11 and seven points respectively. And while playing without leading scorer and rebounder Dakota Dukes, Cary Christian eked out a 29-23 win over Kerr-Vance Academy.
On the boys side, coach Danny Thomas' team went 7-3 against EPIC opponents, including a split with 1-seed St. David's. The Knights' other two conference losses came against Kinston's Arendell-Parrott Academy.
It's been a season of firsts for the young program, including first-ever wins over Cary Academy and St. David's. And with a 15-12 record, the Knights are assured the first winning season in school history.
